Development in lanes would run Oak Bay charm
I read with dismay the recent article about Mayor Christopher Causton and his plan to “develop” the lanes of Oak Bay.
Lest we forget this is the same mayor and council that approved what is now the hole of Beach Drive, formerly known as the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. It is the same mayor and council that approved, during their tenure, dozens of variances for the subdivision of lots and building of disproportionate homes.
This council has a horrendous track record of overdeveloping in Oak Bay. The irony is they always stand for re-election on the backbone of the phrase “let’s keep Oak Bay the way it is.” Which, according to this mayor, is to keep it on the track to being overcrowded and overdeveloped.
Leave the lanes alone. Stop the development. And let’s really make sure Oak Bay’s charm is not lost.

Vices should cost extra
People who are obese or smoke should pay any health insurance costs associated with their bad habits, including higher insurance rates for any property or assets that they or their partner possess.
Why should these costs be paid by people who do their best to remain healthy?
This reckless behaviour is becoming far more prevalent and could bankrupt the heath-care system.

Thank you, John
For some time now, I’ve admired the work that a young man does, as he diligently takes care of our recycling goods every two weeks.
His name is John Calvert, and he so often goes out of his way to help someone in need of assistance lift a box or bundle with such a beaming smile and warm attitude.
It’s a joy to see him work.
I just wanted to thank him and all of his crew members for the hard work they do, which we so often take for granted.
