Transition house feeling ‘lucky’

Women’s shelter avoids grant cuts

The Victoria Women’s Transition House is one of the few fortunate organizations that held onto its provincial gaming grant funding.

With a three-year agreement to maintain the funding signed and stamped, the emergency shelter and support service for abused women won’t suffer as badly as some, said executive director Carolyn Fast.

It’s not all good news for the transition house, though.

The shelter receives funding from B.C. Housing’s shelter program, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and private donations. That funding is down two per cent from last year, said Fast.

“That’s a bit of a concern for us,” she said. “(But) we have a plan that includes trying not to cut direct service.”

The Women’s Transition House is holding its annual general meeting Tuesday (Sept. 29) at the Victoria Golf Club from 4 to 6 p.m.

Melanie Buffel, the co-ordinator for B.C. Asset Building Collaborative will be on hand to speak about women building their assets and transforming lives.

The meeting is open to the public but organizers require advance notice of attendance by calling 250-592-2927 or e-mailing nickib@vwth.bc.ca.
