The Washington Marine Group announced Tuesday that the three controversial PacifiCat ferries were sold to an overseas buyer.
Abu Dhabi Mar, a global shipbuilding company based in the United Arab Emirates bought the ferries.
Washington Marine Group did not release details of the transaction.
The ships were completed for B.C. Ferries in 1999 and 2000 at a cost of $454 million.
Construction ran over budget and the ships were ultimately sold to the Marine Group for $19.8 million.
The three ferries will make their way from Vancouver Harbour to the UAE, with the first scheduled to depart next month.
