Conservatory summer program given boost
The Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Summer Music Academy has been helped off the chopping block by a national corporation.
As part of National Philanthropy Day, Telus donated $177,000 to 10 local charities that help young people, including the Conservatory’s Music Academy, which was in danger of being cut due to limited funding.
Telus donated $50,000 to support the 10-week summer program, which provides musical training for more than 250 youth, and also helped the conservatory restructure its management.
The Victoria Conservatory of Music was founded in 1964 and is the largest registered non-profit institution in Victoria.
More than 2,000 students take part in an extensive array of classes and programs offered in many musical instruments and disciplines by 147 highly qualified faculty.
In addition the VCM is the Music Department of Camosun College, in which three full-time post-secondary music programs earning college credit are offered.
