A pair of uniquely celestial programs highlight the latest instalment of the Victoria Symphony’s Signature Series.
The orchestra, conducted by maestra Tania Miller, will perform “The Planets, Op. 32” by Gustav Holst in concert Sunday afternoon and Monday evening.
Not only will the performances feature the well-travelled, award-winning pianist Sara Buechner, ‘science visualizer’ José Francisco Salgado will provide a multimedia backdrop of an astronomy video suite to accompany the music. The vocal talents of the women of the Victoria Choral Society will add to the drama of Holst’s work, written between 1914 and 1916.
The concerts come near the end of the International Year of Astronomy. Amid its musical offering, the Victoria Symphony will receive a certificate marking the discovery and naming of a new asteroid, VicSympho, from Jim Hesser, chair of the IYA Canada committee, and asteroid discoverer David Balam. Both astronomers are based at the University of Victoria.
The concert start at 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 8 p.m. Monday at the Royal Theatre. A pre-concert talk will be given 45 minutes before show time. Advance tickets are available at the Royal and McPherson box offices or by calling 250-386-6121.
