RIFFLANDIA REVIEW: Creature

Montreal disco-punk outfit the perfect kick-off for music festival

The quartet that is Creature may not produce the most profound lyrics, but they certainly know how to put on a show.

Comprised of two skinny rocker guys, a girl in black leather and another in army duds, Creature hails from Montreal and embody the essence of that back-alley, off-the-wall party town from whence they came.

A screaming guitar was enough to get the crowd's attention after Creature took to the Market Square stage at Rifflandia on opening night Thursday.

While blasting songs like "Brigitte Bardot" and one about falling in love with a woman in white leather, vocalist-keyboardist-percussionist CowBella pounded her keyboard with her knee-high black boots. Meanwhile, lead vocalist and guitarist Kim Ho fired invisible bullets at the crowd with his instrument.

It takes a lot to get a Victoria crowd moving, especially at 8 p.m. on a Thursday, but Creature's high-energy Euro-style disco-punk did the trick. Think Queen meets the Ting Tings.

Creature was made for live gigs. CowBella's stare and Kim Ho's shameless attitude on stage were infectious. That said, I can't see myself rushing out to buy their only album, No Sleep At All (2008), to listen to ... anywhere.

But if Creature creeps back to town, I'll be first in line to pick up tickets.
