Harbour will hop for Blues Bash ’09

Log on to the Vancouver Island Blues Bash website and the first thing one might hear are the raucous sounds of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.
It’s just a snippet of their high-powered, horn-infused tune “Gunpowder,” but organizers of the 15th annual music festival on the Inner Harbour hope that and other enticements convince lovers of the blues and just plain anybody to come down and enjoy some of the hottest blues acts this side of the Columbia River delta.
And beyond, in the case of the Honeybears. The Austin, Tex.-based eight-piece band headline this year’s Blues Bash with a Sunday night performance (7:30 start) at the Ship Point venue.
Portland, Oregon’s Insomniacs, fronted by Colin James-soundalike guitarist Vyasa Dodson, share top billing for the three-day festival, winding up Saturday’s schedule with a ticketed 7:30 p.m. show.
Local acts are featured in the free daytime shows. Among them are the Soul Shakers (4 p.m. Saturday), The Bill Johnson Band and the ever-popular Midnights – the working version of the Vic High R & B Band – who round out the schedule on Monday at 2:30 and 4 p.m., respectively.
For schedule information and profiles of all the acts at this year’s Bash, a presentation of the Victoria Jazz Society, go to www.jazzvictoria.ca or call 250-388-4423.
