Immigrants to Canada have to learn many things when they arrive here.
Learning how to live green is a new addition to that list.
With that in mind, the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre is now providing eco-tips for new Canadians in four different languages.
University of Victoria’s CFUV 101.9 FM is already broadcasting eco-tips in Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish and English, while Camosun College’s CKMP 900 AM is set to begin the program next week.
It’s the first program of its kind in Canada, according to VIRCS spokesperson Gagan Leekha. She says Victoria’s visible minority immigrant population has doubled over the past 10 years.
“We try to meet people where they are at – keeping their settlement needs in mind and suggesting actions that save money while improving the health of our families, communities and environment.”
The eco-tips were drafted by VIRCS volunteers and include such basics as the importance of taking a car in regularly for tune-ups.
