Healing continues for former triathlete
Sean Marlowe exercises on the University of Victoria’s specialized recumbent stepper.
Friends undertake fundraising campaign to upgrade buddy’s mobility and fitness
At 26, former elite triathlete Sean Marlowe is five years removed from a life-altering accident.
In July 2004, while campaigning for the 2008 Olympic Games, Marlowe was in a motor vehicle accident with a tractor-trailer truck.
He sustained a permanent brain injury that left him immobile and unable to speak. He has since lived at home with the help of his family.
Two years ago, Marlowe’s friend and Victoria resident Jacquie Farris, started a fundraising campaign to buy him a unique jogging machine.
The red apparatus, aptly named “Red Racer,” has allowed Marlowe to relive the race experience, partaking at local events with the help of friends.
Now Marlowe’s family and friends, including Farris, are trying to help him reach the next stage in his uphill climb toward better mobility and fitness.
Marlowe has been using a modified recumbent stepper at the University of Victoria, “and he loves it,” said Farris, who is spearheading a fundraiser to purchase a similar piece of equipment for Marlowe’s home.
The fundraiser for Marlowe’s $6,000 stepper continues to Oct. 31.
