Oak Bay firefighters host annual 'merrython' Sunday

Bells will be ringing as Santa’s elves take over the Uplands Sunday (Nov. 30) for the annual Oak Bay Firefighters Merrython Fun Run.

The eight-kilometre run, four-kilometre walk and one-kilometre children’s stroll is a fundraiser for CFAX Santa’s Anonymous, a charity providing Christmas hampers and toys for families in need in the Greater Victoria area.

“Every year it gets more expensive for everyone to live, especially those who are less fortunate,” said Oak Bay firefighter Greg Swan. “This is a great event to get people into the festive season of giving. Some people dress up and everyone gets a bell to throw on their running shoes.”

The run begins at 10 a.m. in front of the Henderson Recreation Centre tennis courts. However, jazzercise instructors will be there a half hour early to help participants warm-up and get into the spirit, said Swan. Hot chocolate, fruit and muffins will also be provided.

“It’s a way to say November’s over, Christmas is coming and to get a bit of fresh air,” said mayor Christopher Causton.

“It starts to get people in the Christmas mood and really kicks off the season for us. Also, it gives me a chance to wear my Santa hat which I use as the official starting signal.”

The registration fee is $15 for adults and $5 for kids. A silent auction will take place throughout the event at Henderson Recreation Centre and Runners of Compassion will be collecting non-perishable food items, winter wear and blankets. Participants who bring a donation will receive a free pass to the Oak Bay Recreation Centre.
