A medieval experience

Oak Bay High's chamber choir recreates traditional Christmas feast

Travel back in time to medieval England with Oak Bay High's chamber choir.

Next weekend the choir hosts the first annual Madrigal Dinner. The event will be a recreation of the feast common in manor houses during the Christmas season, said choir director Sally Braswell Murphy.

"It's just a wonderful evening of entertainment, singing and good food," she said. "This is a really unique experience that isn't common to see in Canada. It's something most people will not have experienced."

Choir members will be dressed in medieval costumes and the event will be hosted by a royal court. The feast will feature traditional wassail punch, a garden salad made with local organic greens, shepherd's pie with garden vegetables and a desert of a flaming plum pudding, said Braswell Murphy.

The choir will perform a play called Handel and Gretzky: A Tale of Two Kiddies, a spoof of the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. They will also perform traditional music throughout the evening, while minstrels and troubadours provide table performances during dinner.

The Madrigal Dinner is a fundraising event for the choir to help them attend the National Music Festival in Toronto next May. The dinner begins at 6 p.m., Nov. 29 in the St. John the Divine Church hall, located at 925 Balmoral St. Tickets are $25 and are only available until Nov. 25 from the high school's west office.
