Annual Christmas sail past.
Sea of lights sailpast set for Dec. 5
Published: December 03, 2008 6:00 AMSea of Lights parade viewers will be a little warmer this year. Bonfires will be allowed at Willows Beach and at Gyro Park in Cadboro Bay, for the Dec. 5 sailpast of lit sailboats that starts at 5 p.m., organizer Don Thain said.
Hosted by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club the sailpast attracted about 20 boats last year and about 2,000 folks who watched from Willows Beach. This year there will be two official viewing points, Thain said. Willows Beach and Gyro Park will be the centers of activity, although Cattle Point will also be a good viewing spot.
"It just depends on Mother Nature how nice it will be to watch," Thain said.
Newcombe Singers will be performing at Willows Beach. Kiwanis Club members will serve free hot chocolate and cookies at the Willows Beach pavilion. At Gyro Park, 12th Garry Oak sea scouts will also serve up hot chocolate. More ships are expected to take part this year, Thain said. Admission is free, but canned food donations for the Salvation Army will be appreciated. Best viewing times are 7 p.m. at Cattle Point, 7:15 at Willows Beach, and 7:45 p.m. at Gyro Park.
