Janzen leads Vikes at Lady Otter

Playing at the always-challenging Bayonet and Black Horse golf course, the UVic Vikes women survived the 5,813-yard course and posted a fifth-place finish at the Lady Otter Invitational in Winnipeg.

Kenzie Janzen led the Vikes with scores of 84 and 81 to place 13th overall, while Kylie Frederick was 17th, shooting 84-82. The UBC Thunderbirds won the team title.

The Vikes next tee it up this weekend, along with the Vikes men at the UVic Shootout, hosted this year in Sequim, Wash.

Dickson cut out

for Ivy League cloth

Mount Douglas grad Carly Dickson was honoured for her solid play and a winning goal in a 1-0 win over Yale on Sept. 20 by being named Ivy League women’s field hockey rookie of the week.

The standout freshman midfielder with the Harvard Crimson is among the team leaders in points with two goals and an assist for five points (two points are awarded per goal).

The Crimson had a 5-4 overall record heading into Monday’s game against Saint Louis (after the News deadline) and were 4-1 in conference play.

Rub shoulders with Olympians Oct. 18

To mark the 2008 induction ceremonies and honour the region’s 2008 Olympians and Paralympians, the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame is hosting an open house this Saturday (Oct. 18) from 1-3 p.m. at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

Families are invited to see the Hall’s newest displays and collect autographs from a mix of athletes who competed for Canada in Beijing.

There will also be information booths from 25 area minor sports organizations, as well as free pizza and beverages.
