Host St. Michael’s University School’s senior boys basketball team came within five points of making the Island Classic basketball tournament’s championship division final on the weekend.
But it was Cedar secondary of Nanaimo making waves as the champs.
In the semifinals on Friday, Cedar edged SMUS 68-63 and won an even closer match, 54-50 over Campbell River high for the tournament title.
On the way to the semifinals SMUS controlled their playoff draw against Ballenas with an 80-46 win on Friday afternoon. Cedar meanwhile, had squeaked out a 52-49 win over Comox’s Highland to earn their semifinal berth.
Glenlyon Norfolk topped the gold division ladder for local schools with a third place finish, though they were disappointedly uncontested in forfeit by John Barsby. GNS fell early to Wellington, 77-61 but dispatched Lakeside Prep (Shawnigan Lake) 62-42 Friday morning before a tough loss to Shawnigan Lake, 62-42, that night.
Shawnigan took second in the Gold division with a 62-52 loss to Ahousat of Parksville.
Sydney’s Parkland managed a sixth place finish while a squad of SMUS junior varsity players finished seventh of eight in the Gold bracket.
