Belmont girls go for Island volleyball championships

The Belmont Bulldogs junior girls volleyball team has been on fire all season long and in regular league play they have 40 wins under its belt.

The undefeated team earned the title of city champions and is determined to win the Island Championships on Nov. 21 and 22 in Brentwood Bay.

“We are a very good serving team,” said coach Ken Lowe. “At this level serving and passing will win every game.”

Several girls from the team have been involved in club volleyball for years. Club volleyball season starts when the school season ends.

Lowe said with players getting more time to hone their skills on the court, his team has become much stronger.

Although about half of the girls had never been on a volleyball team before, they were all athletic and had experience in other sports such as basketball and soccer.

The success of the team is also credited to the camaraderie of the girls.

“They are all good friends and they support each other,” Lowe said. “It makes my job a heck of a lot easier.”

Currently, Lowe is looking for any Grade 8 students who might be interested in joining a club volleyball team.

The group would be located on the West Shore and affiliated with Victoria Volleyball Association.

For more information call Lowe or Mike Toakley at Belmont secondary school at 250-478-5501.
