Car thief takes the bait

A View Royal resident is in jail after breaking into a Bait Car.
Joseph Thomas, 28, was arrested after he was caught on tape entering the car at 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 19. The car was damaged after Thomas attempted to steal items from it.
The car was put in place after West Shore RCMP noticed a spike in auto crime this month. Together with the Aboriginal Policing Services and the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team, officers identified possible suspects and deployed Bait Cars in the town.
Thomas was charged with theft of the car, theft of property from within it, mischief for damage caused to the car and several Criminal Code breach charges for court ordered conditions. Well known to police, Thomas had been released from court 16 hours prior to his latest offense.
Thomas is in custody until an Oct. 1 court appearance at Western Communities Provincial Court.
"Police strongly believe that if Thomas had been released that this male would most certainly go on to commit more auto crime and other property related offenses," stated a press release.
