A thief made off with $3,200 worth of cigarettes after a smash-and-grab at the Mini Price store on Sooke Road early Sunday morning.
West Shore RCMP responded to Colwood Corners plaza within minutes after being notified by the alarm company the front door was smashed. The suspect managed to grab 35 to 40 cartons of John Players and Canadian Classics brands of cigarettes.
Video surveillance recorded the man heading in the direction of Ocean Boulevard around 4:15 a.m., Aug. 2. It’s unclear if he ran away or used a vehicle to flee the area. A Victoria Police dog was called in, but the trail came up cold.
Const. Julie Chanin said people tempted to buy cheap cigarettes on the street are aiding a crime and are part of the problem.
“Liquor and cigarettes are common for smash and grabs,” she said.
The suspects was described as a white male with a heavy build and military-styled brown hair. He was wearing white sneakers, blue jeans a white shirt and a jean jacket.
