Sparking power lines contained

Arcing power lines near the intersection of Bexhill and Fulton roads in Colwood turned out to be nothing but smoke.
Colwood Fire Rescue was called to the scene shortly before 10 a.m. July 29 when residents saw sparks and smoke coming off a power line. A tree on private property had grown tall enough to brush against the hydro line, explained Colwood fire Chief Russ Cameron.
"It's quite common," he said. "It can be wet weather, it can be dry weather."
BC Hydro was called to deal with the issue while firefighters cordoned off the area. While there was a fire risk, the electrical charge can also be transfered from the wire, through the tree and into the ground endangering people, Cameron said.
