Jacquie Farris is not giving up because neither is Sean Marlowe.

At 26, the former elite triathlete is five years removed from a life-altering accident.

In July of 2004, while training for the 2008 Olympic Games, Marlowe was in a motor vehicle accident with a tractor-trailer. He sustained a permanent brain injury that left him immobile and unable to speak, but he has been able to live at home with the help of his family.

Two years ago, Farris, Marlowe's friend, started a fundraising campaign to buy him a unique jogging machine.

The red apparatus, aptly named “Red Racer,” has allowed Marlowe to relive the race experience, partaking at local events with the help of friends. Now his family and friends are helping in the next stage with the ultimate goal to increase Marlowe's mobility and fitness.

Marlowe has been using a modified recumbent “Stepper” machine at the University of Victoria, “and he loves it,” said Farris. Aloyd Fitness sold the Stepper to UVic's CanAssist at cost, and CanAssist have been modifying it for the past three months for Marlowe’s size and strength.

The fundraiser for Marlowe's Stepper continues until Oct. 31, and donations can be made at: Peninsula Runners, 3659 Shelbourne St.; LifeSport Coaching, 770 Sayward St.; Running Room, 1008 Douglas St. and 777 Royal Oak Dr.; Frontrunners, 1200 Vancouver St.; Popeye Supplements 2500 Douglas St.; Godfrey's Luggage and Leather Store, 2508 Douglas St.
