With 2,500 more rainbow trout trucked to Langford Lake Tuesday, one of the city’s favourite fishing holes is filled to brim.
This year Langford Lake received about double the amount of trout under the Freshwater Fisheries Society’s Fishing in the City program. The lake will become home to 8,000 sterile fish.
“There are extra fish in specific urban lakes,” said Tony Massy, manager of the Vancouver Island Hatchery in Duncan. “Mom and dad and kids will have a good chance to catch a trout. We are trying to create urban lakes that are successful for people and close to their backyard.”
Langford Lake was a good candidate for Fishing in the City, as it’s close to the Langford’s urban centre and it has a long, wheelchair accessible boardwalk, Massy said.
“It’s got a fishing dock, which is important,” he said. “Not everyone has access to water craft.”
Massy said the Fishing in the City program will be extended to Lake Ida Anne and Triangle Lake (the Triangle Mountain reservoir) in upcoming years. Right now the lakes get 1,000 and 500 trout each year, respectively.
