Musical theatre group brings fairy tale to life this weekend
Breaking and entering is wrong for everyone including Goldilocks.
Witness Goldilocks right her wrongs at the Isabelle Reader Theatre as she apologizes to the three bears for eating their porridge and sleeping in their beds.
Goldilocks and the Christmas Bears is a one-hour musical theatre performance geared toward children, but written with adult humour as well.
“It’s for young children,” said Margaret Dean, director. “There’s a lot of things that adults will pick up on.”
Parents can relate to the parenting issue that Mama and Papa Bear face, Dean said. Instead of worrying about nightly bedtime trouble, these parenting bears have to put Baby Bear to bed for the entire winter.
“I don’t want to hibernate,” said Bryden Hattie, 7, from Colwood who plays Baby Bear. “I just want to play in the snow.”
The play has a small cast of eight members who range in age from seven to 47.
“It’s a well-writtten play and it’s funny,” said Connie te Kampe, the show’s producer.
Other than entertainment this play teaches its audience life lessons, she said. “Christmas is not about what you get but who you are and about giving of yourself,” te Kampe said.
Dean has been directing plays and musicals since 1974 and she first directed Goldilocks and the Christmas Bears 12 years ago in Langford.
She decided to bring it back because it is a fun play and was well received when it was here last.
The play is presented by Four Seasons Musical Theatre.
Performances are 2 p.m., Nov. 29 and 30 at Isabelle Reader Theatre, 1026 Goldstream Ave. in Spencer middle school. Admission is $7 for children, $8 for students and seniors and $9 for adults.
