Life lessons with a fun twist were delivered to about 800 students this week at the Metchosin fire hall.
The 12th annual Life Safety Expo was put together by Colwood, Langford, Metchosin and Sooke volunteer fire departments.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, all Grade 4 students in the Sooke School District had hands-on lessons on escaping a smoky building, using fire extinguishers and safety with electrical appliances.
Metchosin fire Chief Stephanie Dunlop helped students point out fire hazards in the home, such as papers by a heater, a hat on a lamp and broken smoke detectors.
“A heater needs its own personal space, just like you do,” Dunlop told the kids.
The West Shore RCMP led a discussion on bicycle and Halloween safety.
“Any age is a good age for bicycle safety,” said Const. Julie Chanin. “These kids are at an age where they are riding their bikes on their own and still like to go trick-or-treating.”
