Saanich honey and Victoria beer equals world class yummy

It's a simple enough idea, put some honey in the beer and then boom, it's a world class brew.

Vancouver Island Brewery's Spyhopper Honey Brown earned a bronze, as judged in the specialty ales category, at the 2009 World Beer Championships.

The honey in the honey brown ale is the Wildflower brand from Saanich's own Babe's Honey Farm.

“For a local, small craft brewery to put its small batch beers up against some of the finest beers in the world and win, is a significant achievement and one we are celebrating," said Jim Dodds, VIB's general manager, also crediting the skill of brewmaster Ralf Pittroff.

The World Beer Championships was founded in 1994 and is North America’s oldest international beer competition, open to any beer from around the world. Winners are revealed throughout the year as the categories are staggered throughout.
