New champions emerged from this year’s Cross Country Meet in Sointula last Wednesday.
Audrey Johnston from Avalon school claimed the blue ribbon in the 2.4 kilometre peewee girls race (Gr. 5-6) with a time of 13:21, besting Kacie Brittain from Sunset school who finished second in 13:48. Third went to Isabela Hlavon, who last year won the tyke race (Gr. 2-4), as did her sisters Marketa and Klara Hlavon in their age groups.
This year, Isabela Hlavon ran up a division, which made way for Hope McClendon to improve from second to first in the tyke girls race.
But Klara Hlavon continued her success, winning the bantam girls (Gr. 7) division in 13:20, three minutes ahead of second place Mikayla Walton from Sunset school.
In a tight race over a shorter 1.8-kilometre course, new winner Jamie Flanagan from Eagle View school finished 10 seconds ahead of Robert Scott’s Nicholas Williamson to take first.
Despite moving up a division to bantam boys, Cole Rennie from Eagle View won first for the second year in a row, finishing almost two minutes ahead of the second place finisher Chance McClendon from Sunset.
Other winners included Darren Daffurn from Avalon in the open boys and Dianne Harris, who was the only runner in the open girls.
