PORT ALICE — There are plenty of folks on the North Island who enjoy games where players use sticks to hit objects that only sporadically travel in a predictable fashion.

Last weekend, they were invited to double their pleasure in the first Old-Timers Puck n’ Putt tournament, which combined hockey games at Port Alice Arena with golf at Port Alice Golf and Country Club.

No ‘championship’ was at stake in the tourney, for which the ice at Port Alice Arena was installed one week early.

Four old-timers teams took part in the hockey portion of the tournament — the Port Hardy Old-Timers, Port Hardy WWI, Port McNeill Pioneers and the Port Alice Old-Timers.

Groups willing to brave the rain outside played in best-ball groupings on the links, including some foursomes made up of players from different teams.

"It seems everyone had a good time and is already looking forward to next year," said Doug Bondue, who organized the event.

The top skaters were the Port Hardy Old-Timers, who swept all three round-robin games. The low-gross golf group on Saturday was Dave Walker, Bill Milligan and Rory Texmo, while Sunday’s low-gross title went to Doug Smith, Todd Landon and Ron Minish.

Scores and stats appear in Scoreboard, page 24.
