Boyd goes 1-2 in golf double

PORT HARDY — A few errant shots cost Port Hardy’s Sandra Boyd the title of the Port Alice Ladies Open golf tournament Saturday. On Sunday, Boyd was nearly error-free while bouncing back to take the low-gross championship in the annual Jade Ladies Open at Seven Hills Golf and Country Club.

One day after placing second to Donna Blair in the Port Alice tourney, Boyd shot 47-48 for an 18-hole total of 95 at Seven Hills. That was good enough for a three-stroke edge over fellow Port Hardy golfer Brenda Molloy, who finished with a 98.

The two, one-day tournaments are held the same weekend to maximize the turnout of visiting golfers. While both tourneys drew small lineups, the golfers included former residents who returned for the weekend and one golfer, Janet Baker, who hails from Sylvan Lake, Alberta.

Twenty ladies competed in three scoring divisions at Seven Hills Sunday. Lorraine Milligan of Port Hardy took the low-net title with a 71, two strokes ahead of Port McNeill’s Carol Whyte. Heni Robichaud, a former local now living in Campbell River, won the Calloway scoring division with a 68, topping Baker by three strokes.

Port Alice Ladies Open

On Saturday, Blair’s consistency was good enough to hold off a late charge by Boyd and earn the hometown golfer the low-gross championship in the annual event at Port Alice Golf and Country Club.

Blair shot 41-40 for an 18-hole total of 81. Boyd, who had the lowest single-round score on the nine-hole course with a 38, finished at 84.

Boyd was cost by the loss of several balls — and strokes added to her score — on the front nine.

Viona MacMillan claimed the low-net title with a 61, after shooting 43-42 — 85 for the third-best gross score of the day.

Blair also claimed two of the closest-to-the-pin prizes. Boyd, Tracey Brussard and Molly MacDonald earned one each.

Full results of both tournaments appear in Scoreboard, page 21.
