Escape expands fish farm fears
Dear editor,
I wonder if we ever would have heard about the escape of 40,000 farmed salmon from Marine Harvest’s Port Elizabeth site, had it not been for the chum salmon opening occurring at the same time and the subsequent bi-catch of Atlantic salmon in the fishermen’s nets?
I am alarmed by the information gathered by Alexandra Morton, when she did autopsies on some of the escaped fish. The fact that even one wild salmon smolt was found in the belly of a farmed Atlantic salmon casts doubt on Clare Backman’s statement that “Our fish are cued in on little brown pellets.”
Nature being nature, any uncaptured farmed salmon will eventually adapt and find their way into our rivers and streams, and in doing so will jeopardize the health of our marine ecosystem.
