SAYWARD – A Port Hardy woman is dead and another in seriously injured after a single vehicle crash near Sayward Thursday morning, said RCMP.

The 2006 grey Pontiac Torrent was travelling south on Highway 19 from Port Hardy with four passengers on board, police said.

The 52-year old driver from Port Hardy lost control and stuck a rock face near Keta Lake, just north of Sayward.

His wife, also 52, who was in the left rear seat, was ejected from the vehicle and treated for injuries.

A 25-year old male in the front passenger seat received only minor injuries.

A 55-year old woman, who recently moved to Port Hardy from Toronto, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The identity of the dead woman and the passengers has not been released, said RCMP.

RCMP believe heavy rain and standing water, as well as speed, are factors in the cause of the accident. Police remind motorists to wear their seatbelts properly adjusted and slow down in poor driving conditions.
