The Coastal Fire Centre has banned campfires on Vancouver Island until further notice.

The only areas where campfires are still permitted are two kilometres inland of the high water mark from Port Hardy north to Cape Scott, and southward on the west coast of Vancouver Island to Port Renfrew.

The fire ban has been put into place to protect public safety and to limit the risk of person-caused fires, fire information officer Donna MacPherson said.

A campfire is categorized as an open fire less than one metre by one metre square that is used for the purpose of cooking or warmth.

Outdoor cooking using propane or gas stoves or briquettes is still permitted, MacPherson said.

The ban will be in effect until weather conditions no longer pose a threat to wildfire threats. Substantial rainfall is needed to reduce the threat of wildfires, she added.
