PORT HARDY - Eleventh hour road closures for Filomi Days were approved by council July 14, just days before the weekend.

The first closure requested by Filomi co-chair Sandra Boyd was for the annual parade on Sat., July 18, which starts at noon from the Thunderbird Mall and follows the usual route to Carrot Park before 1 p.m. Closed along the way are parts of Rupert Street, Grey Street and Market Street.

On Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Klassen's Hill (part of Granville Street) will close for the annual soap box derby, council decided. It was thought this event was cancelled this year, but a strong community reaction proved otherwise. "A lady wanted to resurrect the soapbox derby on Klassen's Hill," said Boyd.

A closure requested for beach volleyball will not be needed, said Boyd, because the event is being scaled down and moved onto the grass at Carrot Park.

Closing one new area for Kidsfest was approved by council, Market Street in front of the Gazette, from noon to 5 p.m. on Sat., July 18 and again on Sun., July 19.

"I watched last year and the year before and the kids did not pay attention," Boyd told council. "Kids just ran out and drivers weren't watching for them. I cringed a few times last year."
