Four Special Olympics athletes from the Comox Valley have been chosen to compete in the Special Olympics National Games this summer in Ontario.
This is the first time at National Games for Shelly Marinus, Penny Savin and Jack Errington. Colin Wells competed with the Special Olympics floor hockey team in PEI two years ago. All four athletes are very excited about the opportunity to show their stuff.
In order to qualify for competition in the National Games, each of the athletes has competed and won at regional followed by provincial level games. The athletes are preparing for the summer event by practising their bowling skills regularly and adding in other types of conditioning. Errington bikes to work and says that his landscaping job helps him to build muscle while Marinus works out regularly at VI Fitness, rides her bike and also competes with the Special O curling team. Savin is excited about the opportunity to meet new friends and the chance to win another gold medal.
Special Olympics provides athletic opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities.
“If you’re a fan of acceptance, you’re a fan of Special Olympics,” a spokesperson said.
