Happy’s Source for Sports Midget Tier 1 Chiefs started off the regular minor hockey season in style, recording two wins over the weekend.
On Saturday the Chiefs edged the Campbell River Tyees 5-4 in a hard-fought and fairly evenly matched battle. The trend this season has been to be on the score board first, and sure enough, the Chiefs’ Eric Ottosen (from Dayton Nixon) jump started the game within the first minute.
Campbell River retaliated, but seconds later Chris Appleyard (unassisted) put the Chiefs back in front. Campbell River tied it a 2-2, but Bob Jolley (Ottosen) put the blue and white up by one at the end the first frame.
In period two both teams added another, as Ottosen notched his second (David Marshall) of the game. Trailing 4-3, the Tyees were not going down without a fight. Early in the third, they tied the game for the third time. Midway in the final frame, Ottosen (Kevin Morgan/Kristian Hillard) netted his hat trick goal, which proved to be the game winner.
Netminder Keith Senecal played well to record the win for the hometown boys.
On Sunday, the team headed south to meet the Oceanside Generals, where they outplayed the hosts both offensively and defensively in a 4-1 win. Once again, they were on the board first, with Myles Powell (unassisted) putting them up midway in the first period.
The Chiefs added two in the second, with Morgan (Brook Trainer/Lucas Grayson) and Marshall (Justin Calla) rippling the mesh. Midway in the third, the Generals notched their first as they tried to get some momentum going. The Chiefs spent much of the third period in the penalty box, serving up three five on three opportunities to their hosts, which could have been disastrous.
But, much to the relief of the ardent supporters, they were able to fend off the Generals’ efforts. Marshall ended up notching a shorthanded goal within the last minute to seal the deal. Senecal was assigned net duty for the second time over the weekend, adding another win to his record, as netminder Cole Daley was out with the flu.
The Chiefs are at home for two this weekend, playing the Victoria Racquet Club at 4:45 p.m. Saturday and the Saanich Braves at 3:15 p.m. Sunday.
