Early deficits costly to Glacier Kings
The plot thickened for the Comox Valley Dodge Glacier Kings on the weekend as they dug themselves a couple of holes that were too deep to climb out of.
In Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action Friday night in Victoria, the Yetis fell behind the Peninsula Panthers 3-0 and ultimately lost 4-1. Saturday night on home ice, the Icemen trailed the Victoria Cougars 3-1 after one period, and although they rallied to lead 4-3 after two, the visitors popped a pair of unanswered goals in the third to win 5-4.
Alex Orr’s first goal of the year was the only offence the Glacier Kings could muster against the Panthers on Oct. 2.
On Oct. 3 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre, Karl Hagg and Michael Hammond combined for four of the Cougars’ five goals, Hammond finishing with a hat trick that included the game winner.
Hagg and Hammond had Victoria up 2-0 midway through the first period before Sheldon Trees’ second of the season got the Yetis on the score board at 11:05. Eric Guthrie got that one back for the visitors just 10 seconds later.
The second period was all Icemen as they peppered Victoria goalie Max Pelzner with 18 shots and blew three pucks by him in an eight-minute span. Stewart Lee’s third of the year ignited the fireworks at 7:07, Jack Kennelly’s team-leading sixth of the season tied the game at 12:52 and Michael Graham’s first of the campaign at 15:43 on the power play put the Yetis up 4-3.
In the third, Hagg (who leads the league in scoring) set up Hammond for a power play goal at 8:14 that pulled the visitors even, then did it again at 17:15 to give the Capital City Cats the lead.
The Icemen pulled the goalie in favour of the extra attacker, but to no avail.
