Crisis centre contracted to India?

Dear editor,

Ah yes, another bit here and another chunk there taken away from us.

Now it’s the crisis line, which will be centralized — and then maybe contracted out to India, like many of the other call centres of North America.

Is that what we want? To lose all of our local resources, which have been developed over the years by local workers and volunteers who have given of themselves to make this area so special?

I don’t think so.

I happened to be the co-ordinator of the local crisis centre for over eight years.

I saw how many people were: stopped from committing suicide; helped to get connected to the Transition Society and to leave abusive relationships; and given information about other helping agencies. Many callers just needed someone to listen to them since listening is a scarce skill in our society.

As well, I saw how many volunteers were able to learn the skills of listening and helping others.

We need to tell our MLA Don McRae and Minister of Health Kevin Falcon that we want to save the crisis centre, since it was formed by local people, staffed by local people and valued by local people. Gwyn Frayne,

Courtenay
