Observe our industrial activity

Dear editor,

As I observe obvious industrial activity on both sides of the Old Island Highway near Washer Creek, I have three simple requests of the regional district:

• Please do not give away or sell the Crown lands in Union Bay. Keep them in public hands for all to enjoy now and for future generations. Your foresight will be applauded.

• Please look carefully at the short- and long-term environmental impact of the proposed KIP marina ... the shellfish industry is a fragile one.

Dredging the little bay to accommodate a marina will unleash what toxins and metals? What will be the environmental impact of a massive increase in boat traffic in Baynes Sound, which doesn’t flush like most “sounds?”

• What will be the environmental impact of burning the massive piles of clearing “waste” adjacent to Washer Creek, not just to locals, but the whole Comox Valley. Burning brush is an outdated practice. Air quality is a treasure.

E.M. (Bunny) Shannon,

Union Bay
