Fire needed for a wiener roast
Published: September 25, 2008 6:00 PMDear editor,
It’s really quite wonderful to be able to go down to the spit some summer evenings and sit around a small fire, maybe have a picnic and take your urban guests with you to one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the world.
It’s a community at the spit in the summer evening. There is the warmth of beach fires (and not nearly the number purported by a small but vocal group of protesters).
There are families having a wiener roast. There are dogs socializing and chasing sticks in the water.
There are young people doing no harm. There are drummers making music and being alive.
There are book clubs whose members enjoy each other’s company as they sit in front of a fire on the beach discussing the books they have read.
Being able to have a small, contained beach fire does no harm and much good for the quality of the social fabric of our community. It’s a peaceful, relaxed activity, and a small luxury for all of us who enjoy the outdoors.
Try not to be negative on this issue. Be positive, look at the relaxed, happy community at the spit. Join them. You’ll feel better for having done so.

Comox
