Community rallies after B&E

Dear editor,

In the very early hours of the morning on July 31, we were called in response to a break and enter at our Simon’s Cycles on Comox Avenue.

It was quite devastating to arrive and see a truck sitting in the front window, glass shattered, security bars broken, general damage and mayhem.

As the day progressed, we were to find that we were only one part of a string of events that some senseless individuals on a theft and damage rampage spree had caused.

But aside from being upsetting, disturbing, financially costly and frustrating, it was also quite a positive experience due to the professional and caring manner of the local RCMP members, and several other businesses and friends in the community.

From the moment we arrived at the scene, the RCMP were actively “on the job” and concern and care was more than evident. The members were all friendly and helpful and intent on finding the thieves.

The RCMP had been aided and forewarned of the pending break-in due to the awareness and intuitive nature of a few nearby neighbours.

These neighbours did not close their windows and ignore the shadows in the night, but rather they stood by and watched and recognized the ill-fated intent and called 911.

Many other great folks in our community showed us care and concern, from Donna at the Rocky Mountain Café, who gave coffee and muffins to us at 6 a.m. well before her opening hours, to Derrick from Forbidden Alloy and Steve Edwards who left their homes early to come by and assess some of the damage, to the Town of Comox crews who offered help with the sidewalk and roadway glass cleanup, to the speedy response by Comox Glass and the many friends and acquaintances that called with concern and offers of help and assistance.

It just goes to show that the ill intent of a few cannot overcome the overriding goodness of the majority in the Comox Valley.

Thanks to everyone who offered help and assistance. You definitely helped make some lemonade out of a lemon. Patti Fletcher,

Comox
