Wheelchair bus issue known

Dear editor,
This is in response to Ms. Norbury’s letter to the editor in Friday’s Record (Disabled losing access).
The Comox Valley Regional District is aware of the issue of activating the wheelchair access mechanism on uneven surfaces on all BC Transit buses, and does understand the need for and the importance of urban transportation for those with disabilities.
All the buses in the Comox Valley are low-flow, meaning they’re accessible by wheelchairs.
However, the wheelchair access mechanism needs to have a curb and sidewalk in order to extend the ramp. Passenger safety is compromised if this feature is used on gravel surfaces and really should not have been occurring.
I would encourage Ms. Norbury to continue to have dialogue with the Village of Cumberland as well as to consider options for participation with the Comox Valley Accessibility Committee.
This organization is there to provide public support and can also make recommendations for improvements to accessibility within the Village of Cumberland.
Jennifer Brunn,
CVRD manager of operations
