Water theory poppycock
Published: September 05, 2008 3:00 PMDear editor,
Poppycock, the rebuttal letter of Aug. 29 from Mr. Brennan of Fanny Bay in which he states “...the majority of water loss is through leaks and not yard watering.”
He quotes no source for this ridiculous presumption. Presumably he has had it drummed into his head by the incessant grumblings of Coun. Paul (The Sky is Falling) Ives of Comox and his ilk at the CVRD. If it were true, how then would that explain the tripling of water usage during the prime watering months?
The Capital Regional District which includes the City of Victoria, known internationally as The City of Gardens, has been under the equivalent of our Stage Two water restrictions since February.
The CVRD and the agencies responsible for the protection and conservation of our water supply are doing a masterful job of pumping out propaganda with regard to their $17-million water meter scam, yet our water guardians only just implemented Stage Two water restrictions at the beginning of August.
If the powers that be had the backbone to put in force and actually enforce meaningful watering restrictions with fines as suggested by the Beehlers of Courtenay in the same issue, we could save ourselves a lot of water and $17 million to boot.
In conversations with other Valley residents I find that a vast majority are opposed to this proposed waste of our money.
I do not water my lawn, thereby saving water and due to the lawn not growing I am also putting fewer greenhouse gases into the atmosphere because I don’t need to mow the lawn nearly as often. With the rain we’ve had over the past couple of weeks, my lawn has returned as green as it ever was.
Further proof that we really need more realistic watering restrictions and enforcement of same, and it wouldn’t hurt to elect some more realistic representatives to our city, town, and regional district councils and boards.
One has only to drive by the Shell gas station on Comox Avenue while the sprinklers are on, every other morning, to see a perfect example of water wasting as one of the sprinkler heads has malfunctioned and pours a steady stream of water onto the sidewalk, over the curb and into the storm drain.
Where, oh where, are the town officials, bylaw enforcement officers or anyone else who purportedly have our best interests at heart when it comes to saving water?
I might add that this blatant waste of water is taking place only a few blocks from Coun. Ives’ home yet he remains silent on the issue.
I urge the citizenry of the Comox Valley to deny the alarmists of water control, remove them from office come November and use your common sense when it comes to electing new representatives with a more realistic approach with regard to the taxpayers and what we as taxpayers are willing to swallow as opposed to having something rammed down our throats.
M. Richards,
Comox
