A teenager has been charged with second-degree murder after another teen succumbed to his injuries and died in a Vancouver hospital.
According to RCMP Const. Tammy Douglas, the 19-year-old victim died as a result of being severely beaten at his home on Piercy Avenue in Courtenay in the early hours last Thursday. He was struck several times on the head and body.
Clifford Frederick Martin, 18, had originally been charged with break-and-enter to commit the indictable offence of aggravated assault. But with the death, he has now been charged with second-degree murder.
Janelle Peyachew, 18, has also been charged with break-and-enter as well as public mischief.
Mounties, including forensic experts, spent several hours at the home Thursday collecting evidence. This included taking fingerprints off the front door. Besides the home, the crime scene extended around the corner to Bill Moore Park and along the railway track.
"This is a tragic incident and our condolences go out to the victim's family at this very difficult time," said Douglas. "The victim's name will not be released as requested by the family."
