Games’ decision disappoints village

A change in the plans for the Seniors’ Games has disappointed Cumberland council.
Citing concerns about transportation, the organizing committee has decided to not hold registration for the games in the village as previously proposed.
“It made perfect sense,” said Coun. Leslie Baird last week about the previous plan. “I just find it really confusing, their logic for the change.”
Council agreed that taking the registration away excluded their community from the event, which was applied for in partnership.
“I’ve expressed displeasure with that — but who do you express that to?” said Mayor Fred Bates.
Councillors voted in favour of sending a letter to the organizing committee expressing their disappointment.

Councillors in Cumberland are tired of waiting for a response from the Comox Valley Regional District about the future of the landfill within their municipal borders, they agreed.
A recent motion by the village made at their last meeting was revisited by the mayor last week, who asked if they would consider waiting for the response he said is on its way.
He clarified that upgrades to the current facility did not preclude their plans to review the future of the landfill.
Councillors insisted on sending another letter, though, saying they’ve waited too long to hear back from the CVRD about their concerns.
“I would like to hear from them in writing, what their plans are,” said Coun. Leslie Baird.

Summer and fall were busy seasons in the Village of Cumberland.
Engineer Bob Hoffstrom updated council on the work with his quarterly report last week.
Among the projects is the constructed treatment wetland pilot, which is almost 100 per cent complete, and the water meter program, which saw 150 installed over the fall.
As for land development, the documents for the Trilogy projects are almost complete.
