ONLINE FIRST: Coastal campfires banned with a few exceptions
The coloured areas are where the latest fire bans apply.
Updated: July 22, 2009 10:02 AM
Effective at noon July 24, and until further notice, campfires are banned throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, except in the following areas (see attached map):
• Two kilometres inland of the high-water mark on Vancouver Island from Port Hardy north to Cape Scott, and southward on the west coast of Vancouver Island to Port Renfrew.
• On the Mainland, north of a line drawn through Seymour Inlet and Seymour River, to the top of Silverthorne Mountain and to the top of Monarch Mountain.
This open fire ban applies within BC Parks and to all public (Crown) and private land outside of organized areas. This fire ban does not apply within municipalities or regional districts that have their own burning bylaws. Please check with your local authorities before lighting a
fire this summer.
This open fire ban is in effect to protect public safety and to limit the risk of person-caused wildfires.
This ban does not restrict fires in stoves using gas, propane, or briquettes. This restriction does apply to open flame campfire apparatus (i.e. propane campfires, etc.).
Campfires are fires that are less than one metre by one metre in size and are used for the purpose of cooking or warmth.
Category 1 and 2 restrictions remain in place throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. Category 3 restrictions remain in place in the previously specified areas.
A campfire ban will be in effect until weather conditions no longer pose a threat to wildfire starts. Substantial rainfall is needed to reduce the threat of wildfires.
The Coastal Fire Centre covers all the area west of the height of land on the Coast Mountain range from the U.S./Canada border at Manning Park to Tweedsmuir Park in the north, the Sunshine Coast, the lower mainland, all Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks.
