Jazzy singer from Nanaimo
Nanaimo already boasts Canada’s most famous female jazz artist, Diana Krall. Could it be that the next great name will be Lauren Bush?
Her wonderful voice will fill the Elks Hall in Courtenay on Thursday evening, beginning at 7:30, accompanied by the sounds of three fellow Vancouver Island University protégés: Paul Carpenter, drums; Patrick Courtin, piano; and Nick Sheasgreen, bass.
Bush spent four years studying music and training in vocal jazz in Abilene, Texas, before moving to Nanaimo. She has concentrated her style on improvisation and scat, studying some of the most well-known singers from Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday to Nneena Freelon and Pat Metheny.
Thursday’s performance will include her version of songs previously sung by these greats, as well as her special treatment of Rogers and Hammerstein’s Surrey with the Fringe on Top.
Bush also likes to add some new, exciting tunes that are less familiar to the audience but will keep you humming the rest of the night. A song about a duck will come up, and she’s all excited to share her newfound love interest in a song for you.
