Exploring and researching coastal place names is one of the things which author Andrew Scott does best, so much so he has written an encyclopedia dedicated to the subject.

Scott will be signing copies of his new book, The Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names: A Complete Reference to Coastal British Columbia, at Blue Heron Books in Comox Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.

The book is a collection of B.C. coastal stories, many of which are unknown and have never been published.

Scott explores the origins of B.C. coastal place names and writes of the entertaining and adventurous inhabitants of the land. The book also examines the rich heritage of B.C. place names added in the 20th century, in addition to details about the province’s people, toponymy, First Nations culture and history.

These new entries reflect the world of the steamship era, the ships and skippers of the Union and Princess lines, Esquimalt’s naval base and the province’s fishing, canning, mining and logging industries.

The Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names is richly illustrated with photos and maps; it serves as a guide for boaters and mariners and a companion for anyone interested in B.C. history.
