Don Davis has taken the Legion’s motto of passing the torch very seriously.

On Monday, as a representative of Comox’s branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, he carried the Olympic Torch, representing his appreciation for the community and the organization that nominated him.

“I am honoured to have been nominated — and to have been chosen is just a privilege,” said Davis, who ran along McPhee Avenue in Courtenay for his 300 metres.

Davis serves as the second vice-president and sergeant-at-arms for the Comox Legion — working hard to raise the profile of the organization that was started to support veterans after they returned from war.

“The role of the Legion has changed with time — and though the service to our vets is the utmost importance of what we do ... we contribute greatly to our community.”

By making donations for other organizations as well, they continue the veteran’s legacy of fighting for their communities.

The torch relay was a touching event to be a part of, added Davis, because he felt it might reflect some of the pride Legion members have in their country.

“When you see those little kids (watching the relay) ... it gives you a chance to show your pride.”

The former Comox councillor was nominated by the B.C./Yukon Command of the Legion.

Davis remembers seeing the torch relay in 1988. He was serving in Portage La Prairie in Manitoba, when a colleague suggested they go down and see it pass.

“That’s something that stands out in your mind forever,” said Davis.

Being able to participate this time is something he’s excited about on many levels — he was glad to be a part of such a significant community event while representing the organizations he cares for.

With the opportunity to advocate on their behalf, Davis said he hopes more people get involved in the Legion.

“We would like to see volunteers come back into our community,” said Davis. “If you’re interested — than we would gladly welcome anyone into the fold, more hands the less work.”

More hands to pass on the torch of history and community — just as Davis did earlier this week.
