Magnum had one. So did Ghandi and Roosevelt.
This Movember — the month formerly known as November — every man “in the mo” should be thinking about growing one, too.
During Movember, men across the world will grow moustaches — or mos — to raise money for prostate cancer research.
As if that’s not a good enough reason to grow a moustache, a Movember gala parté will be held Nov. 28 at Gordon Ross’ Studio Gallery in Tin Town.
“We thought it was time the men of the Comox Valley exercised their right to grow facial hair in any style they like,” Zak Cross, one of the organizers of the Movember gala event, said in a press release.
“What sets us apart from our primate cousins is the opposable thumbs. “What sets us apart from our more attractive female counterparts is the ability to grow fantastic facial hair. For one month of the year, we should embrace — and celebrate — what nature has provided us.”
The rules are simple.
Mo Brothers shave Nov. 1 and then begin the month-long task of cultivating a unique “lip sweater,” gathering support from friends and family in the form of donations.
Don’t worry Mo Sistas, women can get involved, too — help raise money, inspire more guys to become Mo Bros (there’s no penalty for late starters) and attend the gala parté.
The gala parté will be a tribute to the moustachioed, with Mo Bros and Sistas dressed up to match their mos. The 2009 Comox Valley’s Man of Movember will be crowned.
All proceeds from the event will go to Movember.
A limited number of tickets will be available soon at the Blue Toque Sport Swap in Courtenay.
More information can be found at the Comox Valley Connoisseurs Movember team page at movember.com. All Mo Bros and Sistas are encouraged to join the team to raise money for Movember and help find a cure for prostate cancer.
One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and prostate cancer is the most common cancer to afflict Canadian men — 25,500 men will be diagnosed and 4,400 will die from the disease this year, according to Prostate Cancer Canada.
The money raised in Canada — $2.8 million last year — goes directly to Prostate Cancer Canada.
