Senior Wolves on a roll as playoffs approach

It’s one more regular season game for the Timberline Sr. Wolves before heading into the playoffs.

Before that though, the Wolves closed out their home schedule with a battle for North Island high school football supremacy on Halloween day when the 4-0 Wolves met their rivals, the 4-0 GP Vanier Towees.

Timberline got an early scare when their first possession turned the ball over on downs, and having the visiting Towees score on the last play of the first quarter while the gun sounded for an early 6-0 lead. By the middle of the second quarter, the Sr. Wolves offence got it going with a 79 yd TD drive. QB Hayden Mebs completed six in a row on the march, the last to Ryan Hanna to even the score. Late in the second quarter, with the Towees fourth and one on the Wolves’ 11-yard line, defensive lineman Troy Emmons stripped the ball from the Vanier QB after yards were gained for a big turnover. From there, the Wolves surpassed their earlier drive with a 91yard effort on a Mebs to Graham Schultz 30-yard completion with 15.6 seconds on the clock, tallying Wolves to a 14-6 half-time lead.

Sunny skies and a large spirited turnout, let the rivalry shine through as fans jawed back and forth to start the second half. In the third quarter, with both offences sputtering, the Towees tried to force the issue with a fake punt, which back-fired for a turnover in Vanier territory. The pack took advantage of the miscue with a Mebs to Schultz TD toss to extend their lead 22-6 with 1:33 left in the third.

The fourth quarter brought a TD for each side, the Wolves scored on a Mike DeGrace 22-yard toss from Mebs for a final score: Wolves 30 Towees 12. On the defensive side of the ball, with an early injury to leading tackler Rhys Mansueto, Emmonss seven tackles, Tyler Stewart’s nine tackles, and Jessie Wagner’s 11, helped fill the void.

The Sr. Wolves travel to NDSS this week for their regular season finale.
