The Panago A Tyees are off to a winning start as regular season play commenced in the Vancouver Island Tier 1 Peewee Division over the weekend.
Campbell River overcame a slow start by scoring four unanswered goals in the third period enroute to an 8-1 thrashing of the Comox Valley Chiefs. The victory stretched the Tyees overall undefeated streak to 19 games.
Head coach Paul Stapley said his players might have been taking things for granted during the early going.
“We’ve had a couple of lopsided games with Comox already this season and the boys really lacked motivation in the first period,” he said, “We were not skating or playing physically and it was 2-1 midway through the second. At that point we (the coaches) had a heart-to-heart talk with them and that seemed to get us going.”
Kurtis Scriba and Tyson Goebel led the Tyees with two goals apiece. Singles went to Gavin Rauser, Jaret Knowles, Grady McInnes, and to Travis Goodwin, who also chipped in a pair of assists.
“Kurtis was the star of the game,” said Stapley, “He played solid at both ends of the rink. I thought his line, with Tyson Goebel and Lucas Marriot-Spencer, really stood out. It’s nice having three lines that can score.”
The locals outshot the Chiefs 19-3 in the third period and 42-16 overall.
The Tyees hit the road this weekend to compete in a 10-team tournament in Port Moody. They have already won two similar events this season, hosted by Comox and Port Alberni.
