The KLP Construction North Island Edge lost 4-3 to Port Alberni, Saturday in Comox but rebounded on Sunday big time.
On Saturday, the Edge found themselves down 3-1 at the midway point of the game. After the poor start the Edge managed to out score Alberni two to one in the final half to pull to within one goal. The action was intense and sometimes rough with neither side wanting to concede another goal. Alberni managed to fend off the late Edge pressure to preserve their one goal lead and win the game. Goal scorers for the Edge were, Tamara Berger, Cynthia Houle and Katrina Hawkins.
On Sunday in Courtenay, the Edge came out flying as they jumped to a 7-0 lead over Saanich before Saanich would answer with two of their own.
Late in the first period, Brooklyn Rothwell banged home her first goal of the year, to start the Edge scoring. Sadie Horner followed with her first of the year, just seconds into the second period. At 14:54, Cynthia Houle netted her first goal of the night on the power play. A minute and a half later, Horner added to her total when she was sent in alone by a lovely pass from Briana Forberg. Thirty-eight seconds after that Tamara Berger continued her scoring streak. She buried the puck in the net to finish off a three way passing play with linemates Una Marsh and Rothwell. It then took four more minutes and a power play before Cynthia Houle would pounce on the rebound of a point shot from Meagan McMillan to make it 6-0. That is how the second period ended.
Eleven seconds into the third period, Horner got her first ever hat trick. Saanich’s rough play finally drew a penalty from a frustrated Scotia Bellavance. With Saanich on the power play, the duo of Heather Meyer and captain Christy Chapman finally found the back of the Edge net. Three minutes later Chapman found the net again for Saanich. That was a close as they would get. Horner finished off the Edge scoring by potted her fourth of the night on the power play. She was helped by line-mates Houle and Bellavance.
“The difference between yesterday and today, was the effort and team play of our team. Today we were successful because we were making passes and forcing turnovers. That is what we lacked in the first half of the Alberni game,” said Edge coach Dwayne Rudy.
The Edge will now travel to Burnaby for a tournament, with their first game Saturday against Abbotsford.
