Fighters earn pass to judo nationals
Dalan Gruszi throws his opponent during the B.C. championships this past weekend.
The Campbell River Judo Club traveled to Abbotsford this past weekend for the annual BC Judo Championships.
The club brought three senior fighters. The first to compete was Daylan Gruszi who fought in the men’s Under-20 category. Daylan, an 81-kilogram blue belt, had his first fight against a black belt (two belts higher than a blue belt). Daylan went four out of the five minutes with him before being thrown for Ippion, which is a full point in Japanese.
He had two fights after that, both against higher belt levels, winning one and losing the other which allowed him to finish in third place.
The next competitor up was Nash Oostenbroek, also fighting in the men’s Under-20 category. Nash, 73 kilograms, lost his first fight but came back to choke his opponent out in his next fight. He then went on to win his following fight by Ippion but lost his last fight which placed him out of the competition for a medal.
The last competitor from the club was 81-kilogram David Crowhurst, who fought senior men in the blue belt and under category. He won his first fight by taking his opponent out with an arm bar, but went on to place third after two more fights.
Coach Jeremy Lenz was pleased. “All the fighters that went this weekend are going to be eligible for nationals this year,” he said.
